Inshore Bays/Flats Forecast
Expect a hot, humid August pattern with southeast/onshore flow, generally fishable bay conditions, and the best inshore bite during early mornings, shaded shorelines, and moving water.
- Rockport/Fulton: Trout have been better around grass edges, deeper potholes, and channel edges. Start early with live shrimp, croaker, or soft plastics in 4–6 feet, then slide deeper or tighter to shade as the sun climbs.
- Aransas Pass / Redfish Bay: Redfish should be best around drains, spoil islands, grass lines, and wind-blown bait. Use cut mullet, shrimp under a popping cork, gold spoons, or paddletails worked slow through sand pockets.
- Port Aransas: The north and south jetties remain the best all-around bet when tide is moving. Target trout tight to rocks early, then redfish and drum deeper with shrimp, crab, or cut bait.
- Mustang Island / Padre Island bayside: Drift shin- to waist-deep flats near bait activity. Look for nervous mullet, slicks, and birds; if the water is sandy, move to the protected side of the wind.
Flats Tip: The strong tide drop from the morning high into the afternoon low should pull bait through drains and cuts. Fish 60–90 minutes around those moving-water windows, and do not waste much time on dead-still water.
Surf Fishing Forecast
Surf and jetty fishing should be workable this week with low-to-moderate seas most days. The better beach bite will likely be first light through mid-morning, then again late afternoon into evening as the falling tide pulls bait through the guts.
- Beach/Surf: Redfish, pompano, trout, whiting, and black drum are the practical targets. Use shrimp, Fishbites, cut mullet, or small spoons in the first and second guts.
- Port A Jetties: Work live shrimp, croaker, piggy perch, or soft plastics along the rocks for trout. For redfish and oversized reds, use cut mullet, crab, or skipjack where current sweeps around points and pockets.
- Spanish mackerel / kingfish shots: Keep a casting spoon, Gotcha-style plug, or wire leader ready near the jetty tips and clean surf when bait is getting pushed.
- Heat strategy: Fish early, carry extra water, and use the afternoon low-tide period for scouting cuts, bars, and troughs if the bite slows.
Offshore/Near-Shore Forecast
Nearshore & Jetty Reports
Nearshore conditions look mostly manageable, but small craft should still watch afternoon winds and storms. The practical nearshore game is king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, sharks, bull reds, and snapper around structure when the run is safe.
- Nearshore rigs/reefs: Troll spoons, diving plugs, or ribbonfish for kings; keep sabiki rigs ready if bait stacks up.
- Jetties and beach structure: Expect redfish, trout, drum, and mackerel activity where current and bait meet clean water.
- Padre/Mustang Island surf: Watch for birds and bait flips; cleaner green water improves the odds for trout, pompano, smacks, and occasional jack action.
Offshore Highlights
- Red snapper: Still a key state-water target, with federal seasons and limits needing confirmation before every offshore trip.
- King mackerel: Good August target around shrimp boats, rigs, weedlines, and nearshore structure.
- Mahi-Mahi: Best around weedlines, color changes, floating debris, and blue-water edges when water clarity improves offshore.
- Blackfin/yellowfin tuna: Longer-range overnight trips target deep-water rigs, especially later in the year, but blackfin can mix in on deeper structure.
